Cottbus is struggling to keep their Bundesliga status every season, and they don’t win too many games during the season. However, they are winning the games against Hertha constantly, both home and away. Is it just a coincidence or maybe Hertha is helping their friends from
Eastern Germany to avoid relegation by deliberately losing these games?
Hertha is a stable Bundesliga team and they finish almost every season in the middle of the table. Some might say they are one of the most boring clubs in Germany, as they are very predictable. Still, the team has enough quality to defeat even the best teams in Bundesliga, which is why their bad run against Cottbus is even more surprising. In the last couple of years Hertha lost four of the five games against Cottbus, which is very odd considering that Cottbus is constantly in the relegation battle, while Hertha is comfortable in mid table. Both of these teams are stationed in Eastern Germany and it is possible that Hertha is intentionally giving the points away to help Cottbus stay in the league.
This year was no different, as before the match in Berlin Cottbus had just two points from five matches. Then came the game with Hertha and they somehow won the match away from home and got away from the bottom of the table. Had they lost that game they would have stayed at the bottom and the gap between them and the team in the safe zone would be even bigger.
If this had happened once or twice we could have dubbed it as a coincidence, but the fact that this is happening over the last three years shows us that there might be something more to it than we believe. Still, we cannot say for sure that there has been some foul play and being true sportsmen we want to believe that none of these allegations are true and that Cottbus won all these games fair and square. Time will tell if we are right.
