The season in Bundesliga ended in Werder winning the domestic cup and Nurnberg’s promotion to the elite. Last weekend Werder recorded a minimum win over Leverkusen in Berlin thus reaching their sixth trophy in the cup and most importantly managed to book a ticket for Europa League next season. Nurnberg’s convincing 5:0 win over Cottbus reserved them a place in Bundesliga and their main aim next season will be to stay there.
After the disappointing season and a failure in UEFA Cup, Werder passed their last test, having earned a trophy in the cup and a place in Europe. The hero of the team was certainly Mesut Ozil, the scorer of the winning goal and as from next season he will be the main creator of green-white play, as Diego said goodbye to the team from Bremen. Team captain Frank Baumann has also played his last match for Werder and after ten years in the club this 33-year old decided to retire from professional football. These two great players of German football couldn’t have found the better way to say goodbye to the club than winning the trophy and securing a place in Europe. After a successfully accomplished mission Werder started preparing for the next season by bringing young Bolivian striker Marcelo Moreno Martins on loan from their fierce rivals in UEFA Cup finals, Shakhtar.
After a year after relegation, Nurnberg managed to fight their way back to Bundesliga and they did it in great style after a convincing triumph in the play-offs tier against Energie. After the first leg and Nurnberg’s away triumph of 3:0 it was all clear, but they didn’t want to risk anything and sealed the deal with a 2:0 win at home. Marek Mintal and Christian Eigler were once again the heroes of the game and deserve most credit for Nurnberg’s triumph, as Eigler scored in both legs thus confirming his excellent scoring form this season. The main reason for Nurnberg’s express return to Bundesliga is the fact tat they kept the team from last season, and they will try to stay in elite with the same squad and without any major investments in the transfer window. Two years ago 200 000 fans celebrated the triumph in the national Cup, while the same fans were even more happy after the flawless win over Cottbus and now they hope that their favourites might fight for the champion’s title next season.
