Burnley is in, Burnley is cool this autumn. We knew that even before they beat Chelsea in the Carling Cup. The boys from poor mining town in Lancashire had a fantastic autumn, with the tally of only two losses in the last 17 competitive matches in both the championship and the Cup. They have become a truly attractive squad that have all the position covered and never lose the intensity in form, no matter where they play. They are currently fifth on the table.
They were the same with the favoured Blues at Stamford Bridge. When Drogba’s genius saw Chelsea take the lead 27 minutes into the game, everyone thought that home side will have it easy till the end. But, they were wrong, as forgotten veteran Ade Akinbyui equalized the score.
The score was 1:1 till the end of 120th minute and then came The Beast, Burnley keeper Brian Jensen. He saved Wayne Bridge’s and John-Obi Mikel’s penalty and took the Clarets to Carling Cup quarterfinals stepping over one of the richest and most famous clubs in the world.
Still, the ones of you who are well acquainted with the Clarets, know the old rule. Since they returned to the Championship (year 2000) almost every season sees them play excellent in the autumn, only to fall terribly in the spring. They usually sell their best players in January, because they must have money to survive, but they suffer a dip in form in the second part.
They did some excellent job on the market this summer and it turned that the new signings were worth the money: Excellent young forward from Scunthorpe United, Martin Preston, young Manchester United midfielder, Chris Eagles and experienced striker Steven Thompson from Cardiff. With experienced defense and captain Alexander who did great in the new role of holding midfielder, they are truly a respectable team.
And if you still somehow manage to reach their net, there lies The Beast and the end of all hopes; Burnley dominates, Burnley are in…
