The beginning of Derby County’s excellent striker Chris Commons’ performances somehow matched with the arrival of Nigel Clough to the club. Up to that moment, former Rams’ boss, Paul Jewell, had some troubles finding the partner for his first choice striker, Rob Hulse. Several players lined up, experienced Nathan Ellinghton and unimpressive Argentine, Emanuel Villa, and these two were definitely wrong choices.
Clough and Commons had an excellent start to their cooperation in Derby’s new history-making, and Commons couldn’t have imagined the better chance to prove himself than cup ties with Manchester United. Chris himself brought the Carling Cup first leg 1-0 win over Devils to his team. He had a noticeable performances all the way and, despite the elimination, he left a big trace in those games. Also, he was one of the best Rams in their league escape from the relegation zone.
Premier League predators, as expected, are already circling around Commons. Newcastle, Wigan and Hull are all lined up offering up to €2.5 million for Rams’ striker who is in his best playing years (25). However, both Clough and Pride Park officials are determined to deny all (even the slightest) possibilities of letting Commons go during summer, since he has a strong contract keeping him in. Nigel Clough added that it would take a “ridiculously huge” amount of money to take this kind of a player away from him.
Yeah, we believe you Nigel…
