Blackpool are left without their manager, Simon Grayson who has sent a Christmas card from his new club Leeds United. Although Blackpool have officially rejected Leeds’ offer to negotiate over Grayson, it appears that the manager had a secret meeting agreeing the terms with the club from Yorkshire behind Tangerines’ backs. Grayson is leaving the club in the worst possible time. Blackpool boss Karl Oyston has announced an appeal to FA about this move since Simon Grayson had the running contract for a year and a half more with Tangerines.
Off the record, the word is that Leeds offer of some £200.000 was too weak for Blackpool boss so the deal was off, but Leeds appear to have applied some other methods. Anyhow, this is not the first time manager left in the middle of the season for better terms. Usually, the damaged club gets an agreed sum of money, like it was the case of Harry Redknapp, and his transfer to Tottenham from Portsmouth.
This time, the clubs failed to agree and Blackpool who are not so bad on the standings considering the team’s real strength are losing their chief just when it is the time to play a series of tough games that might be crucial in surviving the year. Maybe someone will not hold this move against Greyson since Leeds United is his home club where he
started playing football. But, it is not how things are done these days, since Portsmouth and his part in the Premiership are one story while Blackpool in the Championship are completely different. Greyson left because of the sentimental attachment but also because of the money and maybe even because he missed quality work at west coast of England.
Tangerines have been fighting for survival ever since Grayson brought them here in July 2007. The lack of money for new signings is a chronic disease. They are using all assets available – heart, courage and fanatic crowd at Bloomfield Road stadium. Unity was the important feeling that kept them alive this season and the one before, but it is the question how the things will work after 23rd December when the main creator of success moved on.
What a Christmas for Tangerines fans…even despite Simon’s huge credit and contribution for this Lancashire club, it was still no real way or time to leave. That is why I wish Leeds would leave where they are , on the 9th place in League One. If this is how they handle stuff, they don’t deserve better standings…
