Ok, clearly there is a huge, not to say cosmic difference in the quality of Coca Cola Championship and Premier League. These two leagues can’t be compared. The players of the higher rank are top class and the quality is beyond any comparison, while the second league gives more thrill and excitement, as the league is leveled.
Now it is time for the play-offs and a cruel fight for another place in the elite. The stakes are high so the matches are not so attractive. With the pressure of the importance of the game and the “lack” of quality he result is what we saw in play-offs semifinal matches between Reading and Burnley and Sheffield United and Preston.
The games were extremely boring, and reminded me of games of Italian Calcio several years ago. It seems as though we haven’t seen anything on the pitch of the play that we saw during the season from these teams. All we saw were granite defenses, unsuccessful throw-ins in penalty area, futile attempts to create any kind of chance.
We did see few goals too, some of which were pretty attractive (like Martin Paterson’s for Burnley at Madejsky stadium in Reading). But those were the results of clueless actions and rival’s mistakes. Everyone knows what happens after scoring: if the result favours the team, they defend in numbers. If it doesn’t the team attacks without any plan or organization.
Each of the four games can be summed up to one pattern: the teams that opened the score (by chance) easily defended till the end and even if they conceded it was mere coincidence. That is not what we want to see in the games of the best second league in the world. I’m afraid that the finals won’t be any better…
