Sheffield United’s 2006/2007 Premier League campaign saw them being one brave team difficult to beat. Their participation in the higher division was taken for granted before the start of the season, since, to be honest, they didn’t have a squad worthy of surviving the year in the Premiership. At that time the team was without James Beatie and Gary Speed on board. Slightly comical Jon Stead was leading the offense line, midfield was helmed by experienced Keith Gillespie, while Phil Jagielka was dominant in defense line.
Their tough play, especially at home pitch, and their experienced fox Neil Warnock at the helm, enabled Blades to grab enough points for mid-table during the most of the season, but at the end they had slowed down the pace a bit. Last round brought a highly tense situation:
Sheffield United is playing Wigan at home with a point needed to seal the deal. However, even if they lose, they will only be relegated if another relegation candidate West Ham beat Manchester United at Old Trafford! It is all like in a twilight zone for fans from Brammal Lane. Whistle blows and the Blades lose to Wigan at home 2-1, while West Ham win in the middle of Manchester 1-0, through Carlos Tevez. Sheffield United is relegated to Championship, West Ham survive.
Immediate appeals by Blades follow, regarding Carlos Tevez’s not having the right to play for West Ham. Sheffield United are the damaged side in this case, and the court suggests settlement between two sides. 50 mill pounds are mentioned, but two sides are ready to settle for somewhere around 30 mill.
What can we say at the end of this sad story? Are the players to be blamed for the relegation? Or maybe board? Maybe fans from Brammal Lane? We say there were some structures outside the game of football guilty for this awful, unfair relegation a year and a half ago! We think that big city slick boys were first in line in front of the steel city working class lads! Was the express transfer of Carlos Tevez to Red Devils connected in a way with this? Red Devils…who had previously secured their title thus entering the closing game of the season without any worries or concerns unlike some other people. Could two years of playing in the lower division be compensated for with some money? How much money?
Fortunately, Blades are one financially stabile team with a quality squad fighting for the new Premier League challenge. Chairman Kevin McCabe will get over this ugly chapter in the life of his beloved club, but the questions like “what could’ve been” will torment the fans forever…
Justice for Blades!
