Illustrious and acclaimed striker, Belgian Emile Mpenza is not that old after all. He is 30, which is not necessarily a problem for a striker if he doesn’t play for top teams. During his prosperous career, playing for Standard Liege, Schalke 04, Hamburg and Manchester City, he had had many injury problems, but he would always find a way to come fresh and ready for the new beginning. His astonishing goals were his main feature wherever he went and when City announced last season they were not counting on him, I felt it was a bit weird he chose his next destination would be Plymouth Argyle.
Devon County and the city of Plymouth are not quite the places where a lot of things are going on. Pilgrims are sort of separated from the rest of the state, it takes them a lot of time travelling on away fixtures and, in addition, it seems Mpenza had a tough time blending in. he was troubled by injuries, and he is currently undergoing a virus treatment. He opened only three games since September, while, during most of his healthy days, he would be introduced later on and going on through the game completely invisible and unnoticed. Since he is Pilgrims’ top earner, manager Paul Sturrock was eager to let him go in order to cut the expenses. However, no one showed interest for Mpenza…
Experienced fox as he is, Paul Sturrock will not transfer list his skilled striker, but will certainly “have a talk with Mpenza and prepare him for the games, having in mind club’s current situation, and the fact that Plymouth are not getting anything back from the money they invested in him”.
It may be the lack of motivation to shine wearing the green shirt of a Coca Cola Premiership outfit, or maybe the undergoing career has put this Belgian’s health on line so he will have problems getting back in shape, but if he trains well, this could be Emile the-forgotten-ace Mpenza’s spring.
It is now or never Emile…
