Is there any point to still refer to Coca Cola Championship as the most popular second league in the world? The answer is partially YES. Some of the stadiums are always without a living soul while some others are always crowded. There are some different explanations for that.
Loftus Road in West London, the home of QPR, considering the financial situation in the club, is surprisingly insufficiently crowded – we will not say half-empty (because it is not true). The reason is simple: the owner, Flavio Briatore decided to increase the level of club’s organization, finances and the staff by – increasing the tickets’ fee. The most faithful, who were left penniless because of that, protested. Things seem to be improving and the discount has been announced.
Whenever you look the light-blue stands on Ricoh Arena in Coventry or red terraces of Oakwell stadium in Barnsley you could ask yourself is anyone ever coming here. This can be only a deception, because Coventry’s attendance is not so bad, but they have a new, beautiful stadium that only seems empty. Similar thing can be said for Wolverhampton Wanderers and their Molineux. Barnsley have the lowest attendance in the league, but it is still bigger than, let’s say, Blackpool’s whose Bloomfield Road always seems crowded, but is small and missing a whole one side behind which is a parking lot. It all differs if you watch a TV coverage or live from a stadium. Even the first champions of England, Preston North End, have a low attendance at their Deepdale stadium which goes from 12.000 to 13.000.
Thanks to the crisis the club is in, terraces of the London Valley stadium, home of Charlton Athletic, are getting emptier every time, while there are also two very popular clubs in League One that had a great attendance during both their Premier League and Championship campaigns. You guess those are Leeds United and Leicester City.
From all of the stadiums whose attendances are around their capacities, we will select three teams whose fans fill the stands and make the most beautiful atmosphere, show faith to the club they love and display the unreserved trust in the team regardless the standings. Those are two rivals from the Steel City, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, and also Norwich City. At least watch their game on TV, while we would like for all of the people who attended their games to leave a comment about the atmosphere from Hillsborough, Bramall Lane and Carrow Road…
