French Ligue 1 is as exciting as ever even though we didn’t see too many surprises last weekend. Marseille are the only one of the title contenders that failed to win in round 3, while four teams are yet to take any points this season. To cut a long story short, here is the Team of the Week for round 3.
Keeper: Gennaro Bracigliano (Nancy)
Nancy have lost their first game this season, but the defeat would have been much heavier if it hadn’t been excellent Bracigliano working his magic at Le Mans. He saved several clear-cut chances and was unlucky not to have been rewarded for his efforts by at least one point.
Defence
Kader Mangane (Rennes)
The towering centre-back was impressive in the derby match against Marseille, and he contained both Brandao and later Morientes with minimum fuss. If he continues to perform at this level, Rennes will again boast one of the best defensive records in the league.
Gabriel Heintze (Marseille)
The versatile defender has already proved he would be a great asset for title-chasers Marseille and his performance against Rennes was simply top-notch. Heinze works really well with Diawarra and this could be one great defensive partnership.
Nicolas Plestan (Lille)
Together with Rami, Plestan kept Gignac at bay throughout the match, while he proved dangerous in attack as well, having twice came close to scoring the first goal of the season.
Midfield
Herold Goulon (Le Mans)
Herold Goulon has already shown he could be a great asset to Le Mans squad after arriving from Middlesbrough this summer and his performance against Nancy was simply impressive. Rock-solid in defence and confident on the ball, Goulon is definitely one for the future.
Florent Balmont (Lille)
Florent Blamont is integral part of Lille’s midfield and he bossed the centre of the park against very good Toulouse side. That was not enough for his team to win though, as his teammates couldn’t match his performance.
Yann M’Vila (Rennes)
The youngster was forced to step in with Inamoto suspended and Cheyrou injured, and he largely impressed while playing against the best midfielders in France. Another star for the future.
Yoann Gourcuff (Bordeaux)
Yoann Gourcuff was not at his creative best against Nice but he helped his side with two goals and you cannot ask for more than that from a midfielder. Goals and assists is what you can expect from Gourcuff and his consistency is really impressive.
Attack
Mevlut Erding (PSG)
Mevlut Erdinc has continued where he left off at Sochaux and he is scoring goals with ease at PSG as well. With Hoarau close to making full comeback, this looks likely to be an excellent partnership in the making.
Cesar Delgado (Lyon)
Cesar Delgado seized his chance as Claude Puel rested some of the first team regulars after the Anderlecht game and he contributed to the team’s cause with two beautiful assists.
Eden Hazard is one of the most sought-after youngsters in Europe and his forward runs have caused Toulouse all sorts of problems. This is one hell of player who is showing remarkable talent for such a fragile age.
