After narrowly missing out on Ligue 1 title last season, Marseille look determined to make things right. After Lucho, Diawara, M’Bia and Edouard Cisse, OM officials have announced the signings of Fernando Morientes and Fabrice Abriel. Morientes joins the club on free transfer from Valencia, while midfielder Abriel comes from Lorient for €2.5 million.
The club management have given new boss Didier Deschamps full backing and numerous new signings are the perfect proof. Lucho Gonzalez, Souleymane Diawara and Stephane M’Bia are expected to become key players this season, whereas Morientes, Abriel and Edouard Cisse have been brought to boost competition for places.
Veteran striker Fernando Morientes will sign a two-year contract after arriving on free transfer from Valencia and he will be reunited with Deschamps, for whom he played for Monaco during the famous season when the club made it to the Champions League final.
Fabrice Abriel is also a very experienced player, who can fill almost every role in midfield and he will probably be used as cover for the first team regulars. Deschamps is aware his team needs strength in depth if they are to challenge for honours and the latest signings prove his ambition.
OM have been making steady progress over the last few years and looking at their squad, this certainly feels like the long-awaited title-winning season for the Velodrome outfit.
