A potential new signing for Celtic is not so well-known in European football circles. This is a player that was one of the biggest football talents in Slovenia.
Birsa scored 19 goals playing for Hit Gorica in 2006 and he was league’s top scorer. This drew a lot of attention so a 20-year old Birsa moved to much stronger French league.
But being a top scorer is not easy in Ligue 1. The football is tough, with few chances, though a strong striker such as this Slovenian fellow can hope for success. Birsa didn’t impress, after scoring eight goals in two seasons and he went from Montebeliard on loan to Auxerre.
However he is not brilliant in Burgundy either, though both mentioned teams are defensive-minded, and the strikers are expected to help protecting the net, in other words, to return to the midfield.
We think that he would do much better in a more offensive environment, so Celtic might just profit with the Slovenian. Birsa is the youngest international player in the history of his country, made his debut as an 18-year old.
However, he hasn’t scored yet, but Koln striker Milivoje Novakovic, the best known Slovenian player of the new generation performs in his place.
Birsa is flattered with Celtic’s inters, however according to him no one has contacted him yet. Besides Scotland, some Italian and Spanish clubs were interested but the football on the island would suit him much better.
If he really arrives to Glasgow, Birsa will have a difficult task to replace McGeady. Still, having in mind his low price, buying this Slovenian might pay off to Celtic.
