Swiss football referee, Massimo Busacca, who took charge of Champions League finals between Manchester and Barcelona was banned for three games for raising the middle finger at the fans.
One of the best referees in the world did this during the Swiss Cup game between Young Boys and third-league team FC Baden. After the Young Boys fans yelled insults at him, Busacca turned and gave them the ’finger’ and this picture was immediately published in all the newspapers and of course, on the internet.
Busacca made a public apology for this unsporty behavior.
Unfortunately, I lost my cool with an unsporting gesture. I shouldn’t have let myself be provoked by the verbal abuse from the fans.“ said Busacca after the match
The match between FC Baden and Young Boys was played on Saturday and ended in 3:1 away win.
Busacca, a forty-year old referee has been on international scene for ten years now, during which time he also took part in World Cup 2006 and EURO 2008. This summer he took charge of the UEFA Cup finals and the referee of such reputation shouldn’t be making rookie mistakes. According to his own words, his reaction was hasty and inappropriate which is why he accepted his ban without objections, giving a good example to his colleagues what not to do in a game.
