Premier League is one of the most interesting competitions in the World renowned for its fast flowing attacking football, where playing as a defender is one of the toughest jobs. We will try to give you some insight in few younger defenders who are expected to shine at the big stage.
Slovakian defender is the recent acquisition of Liverpool and he has already managed to claim the regular place in Rafa Benitez’s starting line-up. He began his professional career at Trencin before transferring to Zenit. He has grown in stature while in Russia and started playing for the national team, which helped him to be spotted by Liverpool scouts. He is very tall defender, excellent in air but also very reliable on the ground. He was paid 6.5 million pounds, which is a very big price for the young defender. He has started all league matches this season, reducing Daniel Agger to the bench, until his injury that will rule him out for a couple of months. However, he is expected to be part of the Liverpool team that will fight for honours in the future.
Gareth Bale is only 19 years old and he already has 14 caps for the Wales national team. This remarkable talent was born in Cardiff and he was spotted by Southampton when he was 9. Bale attended high school in Cardiff, where his PE teacher had to introduce special rules because of his superior skills. He made his debut for Southampton at 16 years of age and played 45 games for the team, scoring five goals in the process, before he was bought by Tottenham. The Spurs recognized his enormous talent and if it hadn’t been for his injuries he would have a lot more Premier League games. Bale is basically a left-back but he can play a winger too. He has great left foot and he is a big danger from set-pieces. He knows how to play his way out of trouble and that is a big quality for such a young player. I am sure that he will become one of the World’s best players in the future.
Micah Richards is the defender who is expected to lead the new generation of England national team. Richards made his debut for England when he was 18, after playing only 28 professional matches. It seems that he has been forgotten by current manager Fabio Capello but I am sure his time will come very soon. He came into the Manchester City when he was 13 and made his debut against Arsenal at 17. Richards is a versatile defender who can play in the centre of the defense or at right-back. He is incredibly strong and reliable at the back, while he is very dangerous after the set-pieces. Richards is regular in Manchester City ever since he made his debut and a lot of big clubs are interested in his services.
