Another Premier League season is drawing to a close and it is a time for summing up. This league campaign has been very interesting but there haven’t been plenty of new players making the headlines. This is my Team of the Season in Premiership, but be free to make comments and share your thoughts on this selection.
Goalkeeper: Edwin Van der Sar (Manchester United)
The experienced Dutchman is in the form of his life, and his remarkable saves have been helping United to stay at the top of the Premier League. Edwin Van der Sar kept a clean sheet in 14 consecutive league games and that alone is enough to guarantee him a space in this selection. The keeper has been very reliable when called upon and his commanding displays have made the job a lot easier for United defenders.
Right-back: Phil Jagielka (Everton)
I was forced to put Jagielka at right-back position as there is simply too much competition in the centre of defence. Phil Jagielka has progressed a great deal under the tutorship of David Moyes and he created an excellent partnership with Joleon Lescott this season. The commanding centre-back is knocking on the door of the England national team after playing some great football this season and he is expected to continue with excellent performances.
Centre-back: Nemanja Vidić (Manchester United)
The Serb has been a rock in United defence and he is one of the favourites to be voted the Player of the Season. It is really rare for a defender to even be considered for this award and that is a true testament to Vidić’s contribution to Manchester’s title race. The Serbian defender has been really impressive this season and Sir Alex Ferguson faces a real fight to keep him at the club.
Centre-back: John Terry (Chelsea)
Chelsea captain is a model professional and his commitment to the team’s cause is outstanding. Terry continues to give his best in every single game and Guus Hiddink is lucky to have him. He is the true leader of the team and his commanding centre-back displays are one of the reasons why Chelsea boast the best defensive record in the Premiership.
Left-back: Joleon Lescott (Everton)
Former Wolves player have shown on so many occasions why he is one of the best centre-backs in England and I am sure that even Capello will see it very soon. He spent the whole last season playing at left-back, which certainly improved some aspects of his game but now that he is back to his favourite position, he is simply outstanding.
Holding midfielder: Gareth Barry (Aston Villa)
Gareth Barry has emerged as one of the best central midfielders in England over the last few years, even though he can play at left-back or left wing. He has been one of the key players in Aston Villa’s race for the Champions League place and Rafa Benitez has not yet given up on bringing Barry to Liverpool.
Central midfielder: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
Even though he had had plenty of problems with injuries this season, Gerrard always managed to return fitter and sharper than ever and he is still the most influential player in the team. When he is playing well so are Liverpool, and the fact that the Reds are still in the title race shows how well Steve G has been playing.
Central midfielder: Frank Lampard (Chelsea)
Just like Steven Gerrard, Lampard is the key player in his team and regardless of all the changes the squad undergo, that never changes. Lampard is still a great creative force, while his 10 league goals prove that he is a big danger for opposing keepers as well. Lampard has been in great form this season and he is one of the candidates for the Player of the Season award.
Right winger: Aaron Lennon (Tottenham)
The Tottenham starlet has shown plenty of potential in the last few years but he was unable to keep his form at a very high level for the longer period of time. However, that has changed and Lennon has definitely been team’s best player this season. Lennon is great at taking defenders on and his pace and trickery are enough to worry every defender in the Premier League. It will not be long before he breaks into the England squad.
Left winger: Ashley Young (Aston Villa)
Ashley Young showed plenty of promise ever since he arrived to Aston Villa but this is certainly his season. He played great in the first part to the lead campaign and led Villa to the Champions League place but has suffered a dip in form lately. Still, he showed enough to be considered one of the hot prospects of English football and I can only see him play even better in the future.
Centre forward: Nicolas Anelka (Chelsea)
The French striker was always considered one of the most talented players in Europe but it seemed as though he had been reluctant to show all he knows. Nevertheless, he has really blossomed since arriving at Chelsea and he is currently Premier League top scorer. His composure in front of the opponents’ goal is simply unbelievable and he makes scoring goals look so easy.
