Buffon and Kaka – City’s wrong targets

Interestingly enough, the more oil dollars they bring in, the worst results City owners get. Still, it doesn’t stop wealthy Arabs from behaving like children in a toy store this winter. They are interested in buying almost every footballer in the world in their attempt to make the Mancunians new version of Chelsea. If we remember Roman Abramovich’s firsts steps when he bought off the Blues from Ken Bates, we would see that the things are unfolding in a more or less the same manner – but the result could be totally different.

Manchester City’s is aiming the wrong targets and the players whose characters and values do not fit in a dream of the express jump to the top. Most people might say that money can buy anything, but that phrase is only half-way true. At his arrival to Stamford Bridge, the Russian tycoon stole Manchester United directors and thus also business contacts, hence several players scouted by Red Devils ended up in London. City will not have that kind of a assistance, but their emissaries are cruising across Europe firing the amounts no one is immune to.

To be more precise, there are only a few players, but the wrong players to be on Sheiks’ wish-list.

Gianluigi Buffon is not someone you could call a classic mercenary footballer. Juventus goalkeeper is more or less the best keeper in the world, but also the man who represents the example of a faithful player who stuck around in the most difficult of times for his club. Italian football is filled with hatred towards the rivals and “Gigi” is probably the only person who is widely appreciated by all the fans in Italy. He was the part of Juventus’ 2006 World Champions campaign and only few weeks after that he climbed down from the top of the world right into the second division with his club. The man who traveled all around the world, playing at some of the largest and most beautiful stadiums, ended up traveling to Italian villages mesmerizing people wherever he went. It had often happened that the entire stadium and every single fan would chant his name. That kind of a man is probably interested in other things that only money. He had rejected Inter’s offer not wanting to offend Juventus’ fans, he agreed on the cut salaries so he could help his team. When you are trying to lure in such a player only with money and without the clear prospect and guarantees that he will be part of big things, it is clear that all you will ever encounter is rejection. Juventus would maybe agree for €100 million, but Buffon is the symbol of this club and we believe that no one in the club would be willing to risk bringing the fan’s wrath upon their necks. Just imagine Buffon fighting for the seventh place in the Premierships, waiting several years to play on the top level. You would admit, those thing are pure science fiction.

Ricardo Kaka had been moved from Milan number of times, the club rejected offers from Real and several astronomic numbers. Chelsea had also sent offers, but both Milan and the player weren’t really interested in going their separate ways. This Brazilian is not the kind of a player you would think of when you hear he comes from Brazil. You will not see him in the headlines, the boy is religious and most dedicated to his family. Over the years he grew to become a model of the professional athlete who was not involved in a single scandal during his entire career. Kaka is always on the front pages, but only because of his magic on the turf not outside it. These days, British media are bombarding us with alleged announcements that he didn’t reject the possibility of signing for City, we read a lot about both his agent and his father, but the player himself had decided to put an end to that saying he wants to stay with Milan. Things that could be read between the lines is that Brazilian needs a sport challenge in order to fulfill this kind of a deal. Kaka is looking at his national team buddy, Robinho, who just can’t get used to the City’s mediocre dressing room and 13th place on the standings.

These days we are the witnesses of great Chelsea saga coming to its end and we are looking how all of the conditions for becoming a real giant crash down beneath their feet. Symbolically, Terry’s penalty in Moscow was the last chance for Soho side to become more than an instant success attempt. Russian fairytale is deemed to lack the happy ending. Arabian story has just began but that story has got even the smallest chances to succeed.
