It’s been over 20 years since Liverpool last lost four games in a row and it is time for some changes at Anfield. Rafa Benitez has enjoyed a big support from the fans even though he did little to deserve it but it is more than clear he has taken this team as far as he could. He’s had his ups and downs at Liverpool but for the team that should be fighting for honours to lose four games in a row is simply inexcusable. Something needs to be done if the Reds are to save this season and seeing it’s impossible to change the players in the midst of the season, the only solution is to sack Rafa Benitez.
The Spaniard had five years to make this team his own, to bring players capable of winning the Premier League title but all he could do during this period was to win the Champions League and a couple of domestic Cups. Most of his signings have utterly failed to make their presence known at Anfield and that is one of the biggest reasons for the poor results. One could argue that the team only played poorly when either Gerrard or Torres, or both were out with injuries but I cannot understand how a serious team can depend on one or two players. Obviously even the best teams in the world tend to struggle a bit when some of the key players are missing but none more so than Liverpool.
Benitez had more than enough money at his disposal to buy the players capable of helping the Reds finally win the long-awaited Premiership title but at the end of the day, he would still have to rely on Gerrard and Carragher. He couldn’t have afford to sell Xabi Alonso, the player that kept the midfield together, without finding the proper replacement, while I cannot understand why he sold Crouch and Bellamy among others to leave the team with Fernando Torres as only recognized striker in the squad.
Almost none of the players the boss signed were an instant hit, apart from Torres obviously, and team like Liverpool cannot afford to wait on players to gain experience while at the club but they need complete players that can help improve the results in no time. While I admit tactical discipline is one of the most important features a modern player must have, there are also creativity and flair as the characteristics every team fighting for trophies need to have and that is something Rafa has forgotten.
The troubles the team are experiencing this season are logical result of the unsystematic approach of one Rafa Benitez and it is high time that the Spaniard is sacked. He utterly failed to come even close to winning the Premier League title but the big problem is his successor will inherit a limited squad that could need a couple of more years before mounting a serious title challenge. To sum it up, it’s time to say Adios Rafa!!!
