Robinho surprised the whole footballing World by choosing Manchester City over Chelsea when he was leaving Real Madrid and it was clear that the youngster only thought about money when choosing his next destination. However, neither Robinho nor his new team are playing well this season and he could live to regret his decision. The Brazilian forward needs to wake up soon or his career will start taking the wrong turn.
Robinho quickly set the World alight with his eye-catching performances after joining Real Madrid from Santos, and he was soon dubbed as ‘the next Pele’. The Brazilian forward instantly became an integral part of Capello’s Real and his excellent performances left no one indifferent. The defenders in Primera were dreading his every move as the Brazilian’s superior technical skills and his quick feet made him almost impossible to guard. He played really well in his three years in Madrid but he expressed his desire to leave at the start to the 2008/2009 season and Real were forced to sell him. He was thought to have been on the verge of joining Chelsea but in the last moment he opted to join Manchester City as the new Arab owners have offered him more money than Chelsea and with that move started the new chapter in his career.
Every football fan in the World was surprised to see Robinho choosing the newly-rich Manchester City over Chelsea and that decision showed what Robinho was really about. The fact that he chose to fight for survival in the Premiership with the Citizens rather than fighting for the trophies with the Blues, for just few millions more, showed us that he didn’t care for the game itself and that he only played football for the sake of money. I was certainly happy to see him struggle in Mark Hughes’ team and he only has himself to blame. He showed occasional glimpses of quality in his first season in the Premiership but he was nowhere to be seen when things got tricky. Robinho played well when he had the ball at his feet but when his team needed to win over the ball, he was again nowhere to be seen. Robinho’s distance covered per game equals that of a goalkeeper and Craig Bellamy was right to confront him after the defeat to Portsmouth. The Brazilian struggles to make his presence known when City are playing away from home and that is certainly one of the reasons why City are struggling to even qualify for Europe.
Robinho is doing nothing to help his team improve their league position and he is acting as though the rules do not apply to him. Manchester City are struggling this season and the Brazilian is one of the main reasons for the poor league position. He will probably express his desire to leave the club at the end to the season as City will not have won the Premier League and that is probably why he joined the club in the first place, is it? I am sorry to see such a big talent go to waste but Robinho is definitely the only one to blame for the fact that his career started taking the wrong turn. Even if the club officials allow him to leave soon, which is highly unlikely considering the amount of money paid for his services, I don’t see too many big European clubs fighting for his signature, after seeing how he plays for the Eastland outfit.
