We have seen Tottenham challenge the top 4 place few years back, then Villa doing the same last season, nut never have we seen so many sides capable of upsetting the title contenders as this season. Manchester City, Tottenham and Aston Villa all look capable of upsetting the odds, especially since Liverpool look to be all over the place at the moment. I also expected Arsenal to struggle this term but they have proven me and all other doubters wrong and that will only make life difficult for the aforementioned sides.
Due to the heavy investments in the playing squad, Manchester City were always tipped to do something extra this term and the good start to the Premiership campaign proves they are ready. Obviously, Mark Hughes had piles of cash at his disposal last summer but he made a shrewd move in only signing players with Premiership experience and no wonder Barry, Tevez, Lescott, Toure and Adebayor fitted right in. the Welshman now has a very big squad with a lot of talent at his disposal and Citizens have already proven they can match the best teams in the league with the win over Arsenal and the narrow defeat at Old Trafford.
Arsenal’s struggles allowed Villa to challenge the top 4 place last season but as we all know, they utterly failed at the end of the season. The Villans didn’t have such a great start this term and they were left out of the equation but the wins over Liverpool and Chelsea saw them return to the race. Martin O’Neill also made some very good signings in Dunne, Collins and Warnock, although Gareth Barry’s departure left a big gap to fill. Most importantly, attack is in full working order and the perfect proof is the fact Emile Heskey, Capello’s starting forward, is warming the bench at Villa. Martin O’Neill’s team now won’t have the distraction of playing in Europe and that is a big plus for the Villans.
It is Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham that surprised me the most this season as even though I never doubted their quality, I didn’t expect them to play as well as this. Spurs finally have that team spirit which is essential for big things and they have a great manager in Harry Redknapp. Spurs are also out of Europe and they have big enough squad to maybe challenge for one of the domestic Cups. Premiership, nevertheless, remains the top priority and if they can continue playing at this level then anything is possible.
We are in for a lot of excitement in the coming weeks and this Premiership campaign looks set to become one of the most interesting ever. I cannot guarantee you Manchester City, Aston Villa or Tottenham will break the top 4 this season but I am pretty sure they will be there or thereabouts come end of the season.
