Marihuana, racism, restaurant and street brawls. That all, but also the fantastic courage and football vigour, is what we remember Lee Bowyer for. His most notorious media burst was probably when he and Johnatan Woodgate beat up the Asian student in Leeds in 2000. Still, it wasn’t all, since the most bizarre case in my opinion I have ever seen on football grounds is Bowyer’s other act. In 2005, while he was wearing Newcastle United shirt, he and his teammate Kieron Dyer had a fight in the middle of the game and in front of TV cameras. And it wasn’t just a harmless I push you – you push me brawl, there were 5-6 blows flying around until their teammates didn’t separate them, and it all happened in front of the crowded terraces and millions of people watching it all on TV. First one to strike was Bowyer, of course, and hence suffered a more rigorous punishment.
Sure, we remember his glorious Leeds United days at the end of the last century, in the period when the Yorkshire side, with David O’Leary at helm, were fighting for Premier League title, leading at the time a respectable European campaign ending it all with Champions League and UEFA Cup semi-finals. At the time, fans had named Bowyer club’s best player for two seasons in a row and he was an irreplaceable part of the first XI occupying his right wing position.
After losing the berth in West Ham in the last couple of seasons, our old mate has arrived to Coca Cola Championship, to Birmingham City. He has arrived on loan these days, but due to the cold weather didn’t have the time to make his debut yet. He is deemed to be regular with Alex McLeish.
While the cold weather is gripping tight all over English turfs, games are being delayed one after another, and we are still waiting for bad boy’s debut for the Blues. I just hope he will give us the slight recollection of old days, and McLeish could be very lucky to have another uncompromised mid-fighter alongside Lee Carsley and Nigel Quashie. I just hope he will restrict his ”fighting” inside the lines…
