Beckham in Milan – will the fairytale last?

The story of Cinderella has a happy ending; however, the next month will be very exciting for Becks. Even if he gets on the plane to fly across the Atlantic in the first week of March, it will be a bitter wake-up for the man who made the wrong choice.
In these few games the whole world and perhaps David himself were reassured that he still is a top-class player. The way he fit in Milan after only few trainings shows that the retirement days in LA didn’t leave trace, but this brings a question: Why did Becks decide to play amateur football at the peak of his career?

Money?

If this was the reason, then he is not very good at maths. He could have retired at the age of 35 and go to the Middle East or Japan and charge for his name, one of the biggest brands in the history of football. Of course, this last contract wouldn’t be so generous as this one in Galaxy but nevertheless, even Posh Spice couldn’t spend it all.

Desire to be a missionary?

America is simply not a fertile ground for football, and even bigger players than Becks didn’t manage to change that. Not even after World Cup 1994, so it was unrealistic to expect few excellent crosses to make any difference. Soccer is a game for girls across the ocean…

Fame?

This is ridiculous, average American sports fan hasn’t even heard of Beckham. Some might mistake him for the famous actor on Saturday TV show, other will simply shrug their shoulders or remember that they saw him sitting besides Jack Nicholson at a Lakers game.

As we mentioned, businessmen in America expect the golden boy of their marketing strategy to call in first thing in the morning. He would rather inhale smog in Milan and score goals that mean something, and provoke reactions like on Sunday against Lazio, when he silenced the opposing fans. Everyone were skeptical at first, signing this Englishman was seen as a marketing trick. However, the hysteria media created over Becks puts aside the most important thing: BECKHAM IS FIRST OF ALL, AN EXCELLENT PLAYER, which he showed among the best players in the world, whether it was in Milan, Manchester or Real.
However, he will have to pay for some stupid decisions, that is to say he willl be on the plane for America on March, 8. Aside from himself, and Milan professional football scene will lose a lot as well.
