Javier Mascherano’s agent Walter Tamer caused a lot of controversy by saying that his client would be happy to sign for Barcelona if they really wanted him, but Rafa Benitez reacted angrily to the comments and Argentine midfielder is set to be fined for his agent’s outburst. Barcelona are eager to sign a replacement for Yaya Toure, who looks set to leave Camp Nou as he feels undervalued and unappreciated enough. However, even though Liverpool is in a very difficult financial situation, Benitez will do everything to keep Mascherano at the club, since Xavi Alonso is also set to leave Anfield.
Rafa Benitez finds himself in a very difficult situation and his plans for the next season are quickly falling apart. After a very promising season, the Spaniard was expected to reinforce his squad even further and thus build a team capable of challenging for honours next season, but he has encountered big problems at the very start. Xabi Alonso looks set to leave, with his next destination probably being Real Madrid, having grown disillusioned with life at Anfield, and now Javier Mascherano has hinted he could leave the club, thus leaving Benitez with inexperienced Lucas Leiva as the only holding midfielder.
Barcelona became interested in signing Mascherano since Yaya Toure hinted that he could leave Catalans and Pep Guardiola is confident that the Argentine would be the perfect replacement for Toure. However, Rafa Benitez is desperate to keep the player at Anfield and he has already stated that Mascherano would be fined for his agent’s comments.
Upon signing a new contract, the Spaniard was promised that he would have at least £20 million to spend this summer plus any cash he earns by selling the current crop of players. Benitez could generate an extra £20 million by selling Babel, Dossena, Voronin and Leto, thus he will not be forced to sell one of the first team regulars.
