Harry Redknapp was the man who brought success to Portsmouth as he managed to build a team ready to fight for the European places. Pompey even won the FA Cup last season and the start to this season was very promising as well. However, then ‘Arry Redknapp decided to look for a new challenge and joined Tottenham, and the club appointed his assistant, Tony Adams as the new manager. Everybody feared how the club would cope without the experienced manager and it now seems that their fears were well founded.
Even though Adams had some success at the start to his managerial career, the things started taking the wrong turn. His job was made a lot more difficult as the club management decided to sell two key players, Lassana Diarra and Jermain Defoe, while failing to bring any decent replacements. The team started playing really poor and they started to slip down the Premiership ladder. Pompey took just two points in the last eight league games, thus slipped to the brink of the relegation zone and they are now very much in the relegation fight. The players have lost all the confidence and it seems that they are not very convinced that Tony Adams can save them from relegation. The club management has acted after the disastrous run of results and they have given the manager just three more games to save his job. That may be a little harsh, but the truth is that Portsmouth cannot afford to lose few more games in a row as that would leave them in a very difficult position.
Tony Adams has been given a tough job in the first place, especially as the board left him without two key players, and it seems that the management didn’t have much faith in him in the first place. Still, even though he certainly lack experience to manage a Premier league team, he is very determined to succeed and willing to learn. Maybe he was thrown into fire a bit early but even he loses the current job, he should have a bright future in the business. I am confident that Portsmouth have more than enough quality to stay up, and they just need a couple of good results to boost their spirits. If this doesn’t happen in the next three games, Tony Adams will be sacked but I would like to see him finish what he has started at Portsmouth.
