After four very successful years, Gordon Strachan has decided to leave Celtic. The speculations regarding his future had been mounting throughout the season but it seems that losing the SPL title to Rangers was the last drop. The Bhoys were on the verge of winning the fourth consecutive league title, having led the race with Rangers from the very start of the league campaign, but the big downtrend in form during the latter stages of the season allowed Gers to leapfrog them in the standings and win the long-awaited title. The draw against Hearts last weekend marked the end of Strachan’s most unsuccessful season in charge of Celtic and he decided to call it quits on his career at Parkhead outfit. The latest reports are suggesting that he is likely to take over the reigns at Sunderland, the team who narrowly escaped relegation to Championship.
Gordon Strachan had a tough job on his hands when he joined Celtic, since he succeeded one of the most successful managers in club’s history, Martin O’Neill. Nevertheless, he managed to continue the excellent work Martin O’Neill had started, winning six trophies during four years in the club. He also helped Celtic reach the Champions League last 16 on two occasions, which is definitely a big success. However, the team experienced big problems this season as they were eliminated from Europe early on, whereas the failure to defend the league title only added insult to injury. Strachan had some problems with his players as well and you probably remember his clash with Aiden McGeady, earlier in the season.
Following his departure, Strachan said: ‘I have enjoyed my time immensely at Celtic and clearly I will be sad to leave this great club. There is no club like it and it has been an absolute honour and privilege to be the club’s manager for the past four years.’
Celtic officials have already started the search for the new boss and West Brom’s Tony Mowbray looks to be the early favourite. Mark McGhee, current Motherwell manager, was recommended for the job by the departing boss Strachan, while Owen Coyle and Craig Levein are also in the mix.
