The reports are suggesting that Emile Heskey is on the verge of joining Aston Villa and the deal is thought to be worth around £3.5 million. The powerful striker have been in the centre of attention for the past few months ever since it became clear that he would not renew his contract with Wigan. It was only to be seen whether he would see out his contract with the Latics or leave the club in January. Heskey was widely tipped for the return to Anfield but it seems that the ambitious Martin O’Neill has won the race to sign him. O’Neill worked with Heskey for five years while the pair was at Leicester and he certainly helped the striker develop as a player.
Heskey managed to revive his career in the past two years at Wigan and he even reclaimed his place in the national team. The 31-year-old has been in great form lately and he can surely play at the highest level for a couple of more years. Choosing Aston Villa could be very smart move as the Midlands club are progressing in every way and Martin O’Neill is determined to challenge for honours in the future. Heskey is such a quality player that he would have no problems fitting in Villa’s style of play but O’Neill’s attacking approach will certainly get the best of him. Emile Heskey will play as a target man in Aston Villa and with Agbonlahor and Ashley Young working down the flanks, his job will be to command the opponents’ box and to be on the end of the crosses from the wings. The powerful forward is extremely strong and he is a real force in the box, which means that he would perfectly complement pacy forwards such as Young and Agbonlahor. His experience will be a great asset for Martin O’Neill’s team and he will be a big help in the team’s push for the fourth place finish this season.
There are not many defenders in the Premier League that can contain Heskey in the box and he will bring an extra quality to O’Neill’s side. He is also very good in the air and that is something Villa have lacked ever since John Carew got injured. The two forwards will battle for the starting place but Villa still play in three competitions and both players will have enough playing time to display all their qualities. I am sure that Heskey will continue his great form in Aston Villa and show everyone what a great player he is.
