Arsenal’s 4:4 draw with their biggest rivals Tottenham was responsible for the brawl in the Gunners’ dressing room, and the players started accusing each other for two conceded goals in the dying moments if the match. This is not the first time that Arsenal’s players are behaving badly and it is now clear that Wenger desperately needs a true leader of the team, and I certainly don’t mean Gallas. Wenger’s decision to award the captain’s armband to French defender caused a lot of controversy and rightly so. He didn’t spend enough time in the club to be considered a captain and not to mention that he is not the captain material. We all remember the match in Birmingham when the team conceded the last-minute penalty and Gallas sat on the pitch like a child on the playground. Is this the desired behavior of the captain?
And what possessed Wenger to give him the armband? I understand that he wanted a player speaking French, as this is the language one has to learn if he wants to play for Arsenal. But why didn’t he give it to Kolo Toure, as the Ivorian defender is a real role model both on and off the pitch. This is the matter that has to be sorted very soon and the team that consists mostly of inexperienced players desperately needs a leader. Nobody wants to see another fighting match like that between Adebayor and Bendtner. Everybody knows that Gallas is not suitable for the role of captain and Wenger has been hearing that a lot recently, but he doesn’t seem to agree and it could get back to haunt him. Arsenal doesn’t need the captain to argue with the referees or take the players on the night out, but they need one to lift the players when they are down and his decision to stick with Gallas could affect the results this season.
