I really have nothing against Bolton, but the day when they get relegated will be like a holiday to me. The Trotters have somehow managed to avoid the drop for the last two seasons but not thanks to their quality, that’s for sure. With another Premiership season around the corner, I really hope that this will be the season when they finally go down.
Bolton’s downtrend in fortunes started exactly when Sam Allardyce left. During his reign, the Reebok Stadium was a real fortress, while Big Sam’s boys also played really well on the travels. Allardyce led the team to seventh-place finish in his last season in charge and if someone had told the fans their team would be fighting for survival the following season, they would have called him a mad man. Sammy Lee was given the chance at the start of the new season but he was quickly sacked, and club management decided to appoint Gary Megson as the new boss. That’s when it all started.
When Gary Megson played his football, all teams utilized a long-ball tactics and he saw this as a perfect style of play for Bolton, forgetting the Premiership football had changed during the previous 10 or 15 years. Bolton did manage to stay alive using this out-of-date tactics but even the fans at Reebok Stadium didn’t want their team to pick up points this way. Megson started buying tall players that would fit in his new style, mistaking football for basketball or some other sport. The Trotters managed to stay up for the second year running thanks to Megson’s visionary tactics but they have become the laughing stock of the nation that wants to watch real football, and I am sure that nobody would mind to see them leave the best league in the world.
New season is set to start and Bolton bought four players so far. Can you guess their characteristics? Yes, they are all defence-minded players and even though Megson have just two senior strikers, he feels that it is defence that needs strengthening. It is just a matter of time before he fields a team with no strikers. Looking at this Bolton side at the moment, there is no way that they could stay up by playing football and I feel sorry for their fans, who are destined for another season of Megson’s attacks on the beautiful game. There was a time when Real Madrid coach was sacked because his team didn’t play attractive football, even though they were 20 points clear at the top of Primera. I wouldn’t compare Bolton to Real Madrid in the wildest dreams, but maybe it is time for someone to give Megson a boot as he is on the way to ruin a team that was a joy to watch just few years back.
