Gary Megson has recently praised keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen before the start of new season, saying that he wouldn’t swap him for any other goalie. When things come from Gary Megson, you’ve got to take them with a pinch of salt, but he’s been spot on in his praise for the Fin.
Jussi Jaaskelainen has spent 12 years at Bolton and he is definitely one of the best ever Premiership keepers. He hasn’t been getting the praise he deserves, mostly because he played with the Trotters and not some big Premier League club, but he’s been extremely consistent and on top of his game during these last 12 years. During Sam Allardyce’s reign at Reebok Stadium, he was one of the reasons behind team’s uptrend in fortunes as Bolton became a top table club, but he continued with excellent performances even when things got tricky.
During the last few years, Jaaskelainen kept Bolton in the Premiership with impressive performances week in week out but it seems Gary Megson needed some time to realize that. I’ve never had high opinion about Megson and his managerial skills, which is why I expected Bolton to go down last season. They, however, managed to stay up and have only Jaaskelainen to thank to for staying in the best league in the world, where they don’t really belong.
Jussi Jaaskelainen amassed more than 400 appearances for Bolton and won 51 caps for Finland national team, and his shot-stopping skills have saved Bolton a lot of points over the years. It is a pity he never moved on to a bigger club, even though he was once close to joining Arsenal, as he is a player who deserves trophies. At 34 years of age, Jussi is nearing the end of his career and he should definitely be remembered as one of the true Bolton greats.
