Something that should’ve been an unforgettable week for Anfield side has turned into a real nightmare on Saturday afternoon. Rafa Benitez and his without-Torres men have lost to Gareth Southgate’s suffering squad 2-0, first with Xabi Alonso scoring an own goal and then with Sanli sealing the win after an hour mark.
Liverpool indeed missed a heap of chances and it was so evident they missed their top striker, lethal machine Torres, but missing one man should not come as a good excuse for freefalling Scousers.
What a stupid way to destroy the fantastic midweek success…
Reds pulled off and impressive 1-0 CL win over Real Madrid in the middle of the boiling Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday and all they needed to do is to reproduce the same discipline they displayed in the Spanish capital. That really sounded like an easy task since they were to play the underachieving Gareth Southgate’s sorry squad and it appears that Reds have taken the entire job way too easy. In addition, Middlesborough also had an important clash in midweek, having beaten West Ham 2-0 they booked their place in FA Cup quarter-finals but their success appeared to have the better affect on the squad. Second-bottom Boro should’ve been a small bite for Rafa’s confident-again men but it all came back to bite them in the arse…
It looks like that a fairytale is nearing its end, Rafa has been unwilling to sign a new deal with Liverpool and, with his team falling further and further behind Manchester United, I bet the recent development will only make things worse. As a cherry on top, high-flying reassured Hiddink’s men are now second seated and I believe that would be one drop too much for the Spaniard.
Being a Liverpool fan I have always defended them, but they proved to be untrustworthy and unable to produce a decent performance without two players, best players, Gerrard and Torres. Their partnership was the glue keeping the team together all this time and without the alliance, it is all going down in flames for Reds. One cannot trust players like Arbeloa, Riera, Lucas…not the kind of players a top side should have…as much as a good players they might be, they are still not capable of higher deeds.
The result came as a surprise to everyone except for Boro ecstatic fans and definitely England winger Stewart Downing who said that although Liverpool beating Real had been a great achievement, he believed his team might bring them back down to earth. And that is exactly what they did!
Good luck with decision-making Rafa, think it through…
