The biggest transfer in the history of football is about to happen, since Manchester United accepted Real Madrid’s offer for Cristiano Ronaldo. The deal is thought to be worth around £80 million and it will be completed in the next couple of days. Ronaldo has been a real cry baby in the last few weeks, not to say that he isn’t normally that, ever since Manchester United lost the Champions League final and it was just a matter of time before he makes the move to Real Madrid. Even though this looks like the end of an era for United, it is likely to be a blessing in disguise.
Nobody can deny Ronaldo that he’s been on top form in the two seasons prior to this one and that he deserved all the praise he’d been getting. Even though he was never a team player, his excellent scoring record compensated for all his disadvantages and he was even considered one of the best players ever to wear Manchester United shirt. I, for one, could never agree with that but never mind.
However, I am pretty sure that all the people (I am one of them) who consider Ronaldo to be an overrated sissy, were happy to see him struggling last season, when he looked like a pub player rather than the world-class one. I was not sure why Ferguson kept him in the team throughout the season since when it was time to stand up and be counted he was nowhere to be found.
Even though Ronaldo had been flirting with Real Madrid even before last season, it was clear after the Champions League final that he was destined to leave Old Trafford. He started doing everything he could to annoy Ferguson, so that the Scott would let him leave. He probably needn’t have done all that after such a poor season as Fergie would have sold him anyway. I bet Sir Alex is over the moon that clubs like Real Madrid sill exist, since they are ready to pay big money for entertainers rather than footballers, and they dare wonder why Barcelona are always in front.
United will earn around £80 million for CR7 and at the same time get rid of a disruptive influence on the team, which is why they should be grateful to Real forever. Ferguson can use that money to buy either Ribery or Benzema, who are both much better players than Ronaldo, while that would still leave some change to tie down Carlos Tevez for example. For the first time after quite a while Ferguson will have 11 players on the pitch willing to work for the team, provided that Berbatov is benched, and I expect the team to profit big time from Ronaldo’s departure.
