Michael Owen had been regarded as one of the most ruthless strikers in world football during his time at Liverpool but his career took the wrong turn when he left Anfield. He has spent a couple of injury-ravaged seasons at Newcastle and now that his contract is set to end, Owen is looking for a new destination. Several Premiership clubs are interested in the diminutive striker but the big question is, whether he is still capable of playing at the highest level.
Owen’s £108,000-a-week contract with Newcastle is about to end and interested clubs will have big problems matching his salary. Considering that Everton, Aston Villa, Stoke and Hull are the interested clubs, it is more than clear that Mickey will have to agree to a pay cut. Owen has already asserted that Everton was his first choice, where he would form a potentially great partnership with Louis Saha. Nevertheless, whichever club manage to snap Owen, they will take a big gamble since there is no guarantee that the player will stay injury-free throughout the season. On the other hand, the 29-year-old striker is available on free transfer and he can be signed on a short-term deal, thus his future club will not lose a lot of money even if he fails to make a big contribution.
Even though Owen has had a difficult time in the last few years I cannot help the feeling that he will come good if only he manages to stay injury-free and play a dozen games in succession. He was once the best striker in the world and obviously did not forget to play football, whereas his killer instinct in the box still serves him well. The interested clubs are clearly ready to take the gamble with Owen, but if things go well, he could prove to be an excellent signing for one of the aforementioned clubs.
