This season has been one of the worst in club’s proud history and relegation to the Championship seems to have been the last drop for owner Mike Ashley. He decided to put the club for sale, for the second time this season, and he is likely to lose around £140 million, having already spent £245 million on the St James Park outfit. Ashley will not be able to get more than £100 million for the club which is in a very difficult position but he just wants to put an end on one of the worst business moves in his career. The proud club from the North of England face an uncertain future as the new owner will first have to reduce the £70 million wage bill, which means that most of the high-earners will leave the club this summer.
Newcastle have been struggling to fulfill their potential over the last few years but never has one season started the way this one has. Kevin Keegan left the managerial post early in the season after some disagreements with Mike Ashley and that was the beginning of the tough times for the club. Despite possessing a team capable of fighting for the European places, the Magpies found themselves in the relegation fight and eventually got relegated to the Championship. Numerous managers that led the team this season did have plenty of problems with injured players but that simply cannot be an excuse for the dreadful season. It seems that all the uncertainty surrounding the club has affected the players and not even club legend Alan Shearer, who took the reigns with eight games to go in the Premiership, could save Newcastle from the drop. Even though the club were relegated to the Championship, Shearer wanted to stay on as a manager, but after the latest developments, his future remains in balance.
It seems that such a high-profile club will have no problems finding a buyer despite the poor situation it is in, and two unnamed parties have already shown interest in buying the club. The first thing new owners will have to do is to reduce the enormous wage bill, which suits a team fighting to break into the top 4 rather than the one playing in the Championship. Club’s revenue will significantly decrease after the relegation from the top tier of English football, thus maybe Mike Ashley’s decision to sell is a good thing for the club as the new owners will definitely invest some money upon their arrival but we will just have to wait and see if that happens. Anyhow, most of the key players are likely to leave the club, which might not be such a bad thing as they showed absolutely nothing to justify the big money invested in them. It is my opinion that new owners should not be too eager on getting straight back to the Premier League, but they should rather steady the ship, which has experienced some major turbulence this season, and make a healthy foundation for the future. I am sure that most of the football fans were disappointed to see Newcastle get relegated from the Premiership but this should not be seen as a tragedy but rather as an opportunity for the new beginning.
