Following Rafa Benitez’s own contract extension, two other players, and the most important ones, have also committed their future to Anfield side thus proving the hard work and the unity in Liverpool squad to be stronger than ever.
Long expected ‘yes’ from Rafa seemed to be a trigger for others to grab a pen. The turbulent season is nearing its end and Liverpool need to cluster and show character to end it the right way. The Spanish manager has often been disputed, but one thing is certain – he has a great influence both on and off the pitch. Having signed the new deal with Liverpool, he removed a great burden off the team and it seems it was the thing they all needed.
Liverpool legendary captain and the best player Steven Gerrard has always had nothing but words of praise for the manager and you can’t get the better way to rally your troops than to sign a new deal with your beloved club which is set to hold Steven in until 2013. Steven has already said he was prepared to finish his career on Anfield and the latest development is only a proof of his never-doubted character. I could go on and on lauding Steven whose influence in this team is beyond any measurement, but even hearing his name will give every man enough of the notion.
On the same day when Stevie G. put a pen to the paper, another very important player, Dirk Kuyt decided to do the same. Dirk has signed a two-year extension to his current contract and will be tied to Merseyside club until at least 2012. We have already written about the Dutchman who has been connected with a move from Anfield but this new deal will have been enough of a sign for everyone to abandon the idea. Having arrived from Feyenord in the summer of 2006, Dirk has become a very important player for Liverpool always accepting coach’s every decision. Rafa had transformed him from a striker into a right-winger which has proved to be a bulls-eye. Kuyt has scored 10 goals in 41 appearances this season and has emerged as a one of the key figures in Rafa’s team.
I’m sure that, after convincing derby win over Manchester United, the three aforementioned extensions will have done wonders to Liverpool squad and will give more than enough strength to the players for one final push towards the end line. It won’t be easy, but I’m sure they can do it…
