Liverpool have given Real Madrid two-day deadline to sign want-away midfielder Xabi Alonso, after Benitez came to terms with losing the Spaniard. Los Merengues have offered €27 million, but just three million more should do the trick. Inler or Aquilani are seen as possible replacements.
Another transfer saga seems to be reaching its closure. After a lot of persuasion and attempts to keep Xabi Alonso, Rafa Benitez has agreed to let the player leave. Reds did not respond to Real’s bid of €27 million, but they will probably accept the bid of €30 million, provided the deal is completed in the next 48 hours. ‘Marca’ states that Alonso will be unveiled at Santiago Bernabeu this weekend.
The departure of Alonso will definitely weaken Reds’ midfield, but Rafa is expected to act immediately, with Udinese’s Inler and Roma’s Aquliani being mentioned as most likely targets.
Real will thus sign a perfect partner for Lassana Diarra and the pair will have their work cut out for them as they will need to cover for numerous attacking players in the team. If Alonso and Diarra manage to play at the highest level throughout the season, then and only then, will Real have the chance to fight for trophies.
