Considering that the season has ended in all major leagues and that the clubs are busy looking for possible signings, Confederations Cup and Under 21 European Championship are in the centre of attention at the moment. South Africa, the host country of the Confederations Cup, is a talented footballing nation but not too many of the national team players have attracted interest from Europe. Nevertheless, one player in particular has shone in the last few years and that is Orlando Pirates playmaker Teko Modise.
Modise came to the prominence during the 2008 African Nations Cup when he enchanted fans with impressive technique and great vision even though his national team failed to go past the group stage. The 26-year-old is a very influential player and a true leader on the pitch. He has been named South African Premier Soccer League Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009, which proves that he is held in high regard by his fellow countrymen. Modise has been the most influential player in the national team, together with Steven Pienaar and he is expected to prove his worth at the Confederations Cup and next year’s World Cup in South Africa.
One of the hottest prospects in Africa at the moment is widely tipped for a move to Europe this summer. Manchester City, Aston Villa and Wigan are just some of the teams interested in his services but considering that Orlando Pirates are one of the two biggest clubs in South Africa, they will not sell him under £4 million. That is a lot of money for a player coming from such a low-profile league, but Modise is definitely worth all the money. He has already expressed desire to move to England and the odds are that his wish will be fulfilled. The excellent playmaker has been named man of the match in South Africa’s opening game at the Confederations Cup and if he continues with great performances, I have no doubts that the interested clubs will regret for not having tied him down before the start of the competition.
