You can love John Terry, you can hate him, you can laugh at his off-the-pitch blunders but you cannot deny that he was the foundation of Chelsea’s dreams of Europe.
Roman Abramovich’s big spending has certainly taken away the little charm “blues” had in the past, but precisely Terry was the link to the better days when Chelsea represented the classy decadence of England.
Everything after that was sheer agonizing with dirty Russian money, the inadequate successes, having in mind the amount of money invested and Chelsea lost their identity in the obsession called the Champions League.
If Terry leaves Chelsea, it will be the end of an era, but does he really need such an adventure?
Some will say: more money is always welcome, but there is one thing that differentiates John Terry from other players that will never be able to spend the money earned, but they are still obsessed with having it more and more. He is ready to risk the money by placing his head under rival’s shoe.
That is the difference. When on the pitch he doesn’t think about money, he doesn’t care about his hair, how he looks and doesn’t cry over broken bones and blood on his head. You can easily imagine Terry playing in English league 20 years earlier, which is not the case with most of the other players.
What’s in for him in City? There is no mention of a challenge, City will sack Hughes in October and end up on excellent eighth place. Perhaps they try it in UEFA Cup and reach the finals of League Cup, but the money will, nevertheless, be wasted.
It is not the players, but the mentality and buying players only for the purpose of spending the money. Serious players like Buffon, Kaka and Eto’o turned them down and the club bought several money chasers but the money doesn’t turn a loser into a winner.
Terry doesn’t fit in such environment, because he is the player who cares. The moment he starts feeling helpless, he will regret it, even with all the money.
The point is that it is better ending up ripped off in Champions League semifinals that winning UEFA Cup. Because, in a few years, everyone will still be talking about the semifinals against Barcelona, but no one will remember who won UEFA Cup.
After all, it doesn’t even matter.
