When someone mentions the Premier League managers most of us remembers Alex Ferguson, Rafa Benitez or Arsene Wenger. However, I will try to point out the bosses of some of the smaller clubs who did a great job with the resources available.
Number 3: Steve Bruce (Wigan)
Steve Bruce took over at Wigan last season and he managed to keep the Latics in the Premier League. The team was struggling for survival ever since they were promoted from the Chmapionship and Bruce wanted to put a stop to this. He did a great job in the transfer market despite the lack of funds and brought players like Lee Cattermole, Maynor Figueroa, Amr Zaki, Kapo and Daniel De Ridder. He reinforced the squad in just the right positions and didn’t impair the good atmosphere in the team. Even though he has the squad of great individuals, Bruce managed to make them work hard for the team and that is Wigan’s biggest advantage over their opponents. The team dominated all the games so far and they were very unlucky not to win more points. The match against Chelsea at JJB stadium proved that this team has a lot of potential, as they largely outplayed the title contenders. They lost the game thanks to Deco’s free kick but everybody could see how Bruce transformed the team fighting for survival to the team capable of competing with the best in England.
Number 2: Tony Mowbray (WBA)
Mowbray started his career in West Brom in October 2006 and took the team to play off finals at Wembley.
His team surprisingly lost to Derby, which made the best players leave the club. Jason Koumas, Diomansy Kamara and Curtis Davies were sold and Mowbray faced a tough job of rebuilding the team. He did an excellent job the following season and took his team to the Premier League. The team was characterized by attacking style of play, and West Brom scored 88 goals in the Championship. Everybody expected that the manager will have to play more defensively in the Premier League but he stated that he didn’t intend to change his tactics. Mowbray knew that he needed to reinforce his team and he brought a lot of new players but still managed to keep the harmony in the squad. Together with his brave tactics it produced great results and the team is in the top part of the table after seven rounds. Although it is early in the season it is now clear that West Brom is in for a very successful season.
Number 1: Phil Brown (Hull City)
Phil Brown certainly did the best job of all the Premier League managers this season, having led Hull to the third position in the overall standings. Hull City’s incredible success at the start of their first ever Premier League season has to be attributed partly to Phil Brown. The manager did a great job last season when the Tigers were promoted from the Championship but he faced a tough task of reinforcing his squad to be able to compete at the top level. Brown made the right mix between home based players and the foreign players who had something to prove. Most of these players had the chance to shine but failed to take it and they were very motivated to prove their credentials. Brown made a good atmosphere in the team and the Tigers battled bravely in every game which produced excellent results. They managed to beat teams like Arsenal and Tottenham away and Brown has to take some credit for tactically outwitting his counterparts. Hull’s record of 14 points from 7 rounds says it all.
