This Premiership season has been one of the most interesting ones in recent years, looking at both ends of the table. With just eight games to go, there are still nine teams that will have to worry about survival and I will try to predict the three teams that will be relegated to the Championship. Out of the three promoted teams, only West Bromwich are likely to go down, while Hull and Stoke have good chance to avoid the drop.
It is now clear that West Bromwich will return to the Championship even though they have shown some promising performances this season. However, they were too naive and inexperienced and that is the main reason why they are rock bottom at the moment. The Baggies are now seven points adrift of safety and with just eight games to go that is a bit too much, wouldn’t you say? Tony Mowbray has been unable to sort put his defence and that is one of the main reasons for the poor league position as defensive mistakes have cost them precious points. The team are also struggling in the scoring department and I cannot see how they will avoid the drop.
The second team to go down are definitely Middlesbrough and that is really not a big surprise. Gareth Southgate’s team have been struggling from the very start to the league campaign and their performances have been very disappointing even when they were far away from the dangerous zone. The club failed to reinforce the squad over the summer, whereas the decision to stick with inexperienced and not very talented Southgate will cost them Premiership survival. Boro are just four points adrift of safety but they are showing no signs of improvement and I don’t think they have enough quality to stay in the league.
It wasn’t that difficult picking West Brom and Boro as the two teams to get relegated but the third team to go down is obviously a mystery. Bolton, Hull, Sunderland, Stoke, Blackburn and Newcastle are in the mix, with just five points separating these teams. Newcastle are in the worst position at the moment and they also have the most difficult fixture list out of all the relegation rivals. Therefore, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Magpies get relegated but that would be a big loss for the Premier League and that is why I hope that it wouldn’t happen. Even though Bolton are currently five points clear of the relegation zone, they are very disappointing lately and also have a very difficult fixture list. That is why I will opt for Bolton and it is certainly worth betting a few quid on the Trotters to go down as the odds are as high as 11/1 (12.00).
