Yes, I am aware Daniel Agger is not even a left-back but it just shows how badly Insua has been playing. The Reds had their share of problems this season but one of the biggest reasons behind the disappointing results is the fact defence is leaking too many goals. Johnson, Carragher and Skrtel are doing really well when they are fully fit, thus I am positive the back line would be much more stable with Agger replacing completely unconvincing Insua.
Emiliano Insua was signed in 2007 from Boca Juniors without playing a single game for Los Xeneizes. He didn’t really do anything to merit a first team place but only took advantage of Aurelio’s constant injury problems and poor form of Andrea Dossena, and he started the season as first choice left-back. However, I was not at all convinced with his performances so far and seeing that Rafa Benitez doesn’t have a lot of options before the transfer window opens in January, he should go with Daniel Agger.
First thing I need to say about the Argentine is that his defensive game is not nearly good enough for a team like Liverpool. His lack of height is often a big problem at defending set-pieces and need I say Agger would do a lot better job in defence. For such a short player, Insua would have to be great at going forward in order to compensate his defensive frailties but he simply is not. Just look at the match Liverpool – Birmingham on Monday when 90% of his passes were directed backwards and I didn’t see him take the player on during the course of the game. Agger is essentially a centre-back but he’s got an excellent left foot, is very confident at going forward and his long ball is among the best there is. The Dane would definitely offer the Reds a new dimension on the left wing they desperately need.
The Dane is better than Insua in almost every area of the game and I am just wondering how Rafa Benitez has missed this. With Glen Johnson thoroughly impressive at right back, and rock-solid Carragher and Skrtel in the heart of defence, Danny Agger would give the back line a much needed stability and a new dimension in attack, thus I am confident the results would improve with the Dane coming in for Insua.
