Mark Hughes arrived at Manchester City to start building the team capable of challenging for the trophies in the near future but things do not look too optimistic for the Eastlands outfit at the moment. The Citizens had plenty of problems despite severely strengthening the squad in the last two transfer windows and they will miss out on the European qualification. This raises doubts over Hughes’ future at the club even though the owners are adamant that the Welshman will lead the team next season. Hughes even dared to say that he was surprised to have been criticized so much and he probably thinks that mid table finish is quite satisfying. I’ll just give you a couple of reasons why he should be sacked at the end of this season.
The poor league position speaks for itself as mid table finish is simply not enough for the team with players like Robinho, Elano, Wright-Phillips, Bellamy, Richards and others. Even though not too many players have arrived this season, Mark Hughes has been unable to control the dressing room atmosphere and that is definitely one of the reasons for the poor performances. He allowed Robinho to do whatever he wants and no wonder that the Brazilian have been playing below all expectations. The other players were certainly not happy with this preferred treatment and that caused a lot of dressing room unrest. The boss couldn’t make Robinho work for the team and the Brazilian failed to show anything of his lavish talent.
Manchester City played fairly well at their City of Manchester Stadium, but away performances have been utterly disappointing. City boast the fourth worst away record in the Premier League, having won just 2 of 19 away games, which is completely unacceptable for the team that should be fighting for Europe. The team obviously lack the character and a true leader, thus the poor performances in the travels are not that surprising. The failure to qualify for Europe, which is something Mark Hughes has got to be blamed for, will hinder City’s progress a great deal. Even though Mark Hughes or his successor will have plenty of funds at disposal, they will be unable to bring any world-class players as no respected footballer (Robinho doesn’t fall into this category as he is by no means respected) will join the club which will not play in Europe next season. Therefore, Mark Hughes has set the club one season back and they will again have to chase European places next season rather than playing in Europe. Hence, I don’t see how the owners can be satisfied with the Welsh manager, who has cost them a great deal of money, and time, by failing to lead his team to the European places.
