After several months of speculations, Russian winger Yuri Zhirkov finally signed a deal with Chelsea. The player was thought to be keen on Barcelona move but he finally gave in under pressure from Roman Abramovich and Guus Hiddink, with CSKA set to pocket €21 million from the deal.
Chelsea have been trying to sign Zhirkov from the start of the transfer window but the player kept flirting with Barcelona since he was not too keen on making his move to Stamford Bridge. Nevertheless, he agreed to sign for the Blues after lengthy negotiations, with Chelsea making official statement that they had secured the services of ‘Russian Ronaldinho’. CSKA will earn €21 million, whereas Zhirkov will sign a four-year deal.
Zhirkov will increase competition for places at Chelsea, since he can play practically in every position on the left hand side and he is great at going forward. The player has been a regular starter in the national team, and this could be one of the reasons why he opted to join Chelsea.
Roman Abramovich and Guus Hiddink have reportedly pressurized Zhirkov to join Chelsea, while some Russian newspapers even claim that Hiddink threatened to drop the player from the national team unless he signs for the Stamford Bridge outfit.
