Even though Franck Ribery was widely tipped to leave Alianz Arena this summer, he could stay for another season and then leave for just €22 million. It’s clear that Real Madrid is Ribery’s next destination and Los Merengues are likely to save around €60 million under Article 17 of FIFA Regulations. The Bavarians intend to take the matter to court but sports law experts, consulted by ‘AS’, say that Bayern will lose the case.
It seems that Real will wait for another season before bringing the French winger to Santiago Bernabeu. Ribery has already stated that he only intended to go to Real and he will reject all other offers. Bayern has offered him a new deal, but Ribery will not accept it.
What is this actually about?
Under FIFA Regulations, the Frenchman can invoke Article 17 in a year’s time, since every player between the ages of 23 and 28 can leave his club if he has served three years of a four or five-year contract. In this case, the Bavarians would be entitled to the fee believed to be around €22 million. This is much less than the €80 million, Bayern were asking for the player.
Professional Footballers’ Association has already announced sanctions against Bayern if they try to deny Ribery the right to leave the club.
This Article 17 is not practiced too often, but let us remind you of Philippe Mexes and his move to Roma from Auxerre. The French club wanted €18 million for the player but Roma ended up paying just €7 million using the Article 17.
