Maradona’s appointment as Argentina coach is one of the recent examples of the numerous former players opting for the coaching career. Milan legend Alessandro Costacurta is another great player who has just started his coaching career. He took over at Mantova, Serie B team and managed to win three of his first four games. Of course that I cannot say he is already a good coach after just one month but playing under great coaches will certainly help him in his new career.
Costacurta is the member of Milan’s side of the late 80’s, who opted for the coaching career following the end of their playing days. Ancelotti, Rijkaard, Gullit, Donadoni and Marco van Basten have all become coaches after the successful playing career. This is not too big a surprise considering they had great masters at Milan. One can learn a lot from people like Arigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello and Costacurta certainly picked up a lot of useful tricks from these great managers. He was always a role model for the younger players and his discipline can help him a lot at his new job. His current players at Modena have to respect all he has achieved, which makes his job a lot easier. His tremendous experience of playing in Serie A is another big plus and I wouldn’t be too surprised to see Costacurta at the helm of one of the Italian Giants few years from now.
