The latest reports are suggesting that Lazio could sign Roberto Ayala in January in order to boost their defence. The Argentinean is 35-years-old and is currently playing for Zaragoza in Spanish second division. This could be a real gamble, considering that Ayala is nearing the end of his playing career but he could be great as a short-term measure.
Just over a year ago, he was the captain of Argentinean national team and playing football at the highest level. He is the second most capped player in Argentina’s history with 115 appearances for his native country. The peak of his career was while playing for Valencia, where he played two times in the Champions League final, but his team lost both times. He also played for River Plate, Napoli and Milan among others and has wealth of footballing experience.
Even though he is only 175cm tall, his timing in the air is perfect and he always finds a way to reach the ball before his opponent. Ayala has great tactical awareness, and in this way he compensates for the lack of speed, and he is a real menace for the attackers. Just the fact that he played 115 times for one of the best national teams in the World shows what a great player he is, and I feel that he still has few years before finishing his playing career. He could help Lazio a great deal and be a real role model for the younger players. Lazio needs some experience and stability in the back line and Ayala could be the right choice.
