Leonardo will be officially unveiled on Monday and this will be his first coaching job. Silvio Berlusconi’s favourite ended his playing career at Milan and he quickly rose through the club’s hierarchy. The club sees this appointment as the beginning of an era, similar to the one which started when Arigo Sacchi was appointed as coach.
As Gazzetta dello Sport understands, Leonardo has been chosen as the man to succeed Carlo Ancelotti. The official unveiling will be made on Monday and the Brazilian, who was positioned very high in club’s hierarchy, will start his first coaching job.
Leonardo is 40 years old and he’s got impressive playing career behind him. He played for San Paolo, with whom he won the Intercontinental Cup, Japanese Kashima Antlers, Paris Saint Germain, Milan and Galatasaray. He hung up the boots at Milan six years ago. During his career at Rossoneri, he amassed 97 appearances, scoring 30 goals in the process, with the highlight being Serie A title in 1999.
After the end of his playing career, Leonardo was immediately appointed club scout and during the six years he slowly moved up the ladder to become the sporting director. Silvio Berlusconi’s favourite is very educated and well thought of, while people at Milan feel that his appointment will mark the beginning of an era, bearing in mind what happened 20 years ago when Arigo Sacchi was given the chance.
