It seems that Jose Mourinho has run out of the ideas. The fact that he used alleged interest of Real Madrid to get few more Euros from Massimo Moratti won’t make him a better coach in the next season.
The title is no longer enough and the Portuguese manager is aware of that. The stake will be much higher next year, as his obsession, Europe is not closer than last June. The games against Manchester United showed how poor the Italian champion actually is. It is one thing to win the matches in Serie A against weaker-than-ever Juventus and retirement home from Milan with the help of all referees and quite another thing to face best teams of Europe.
Mourinho said what he had to say, he got on everyone’s nerves in Italy, pretended he knew everything best but he will have to reign Europe in order to prove that.
The trouble is that the General hasn’t got the squad to do that nor the idea where to find reliable soldiers.
To be honest, Inter are an average team. They have an excellent keeper and the expert in „small games“, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He is a cyclop in the land of the blind, fantastic against weaker rivals. However, Ibra somehow fails when it is most important and we have already said that the good play in Italy is not good enough for Europe.
Mourinho’s attempt to create new Chelsea in Lombardia was doomed to failure. The pillars of his Chelsea were Lampard, Terry and a completely different, younger Drogba. It is hard to believe that any of these players can be a part of Inter in the next season.
Buying Carvalho is not something to start with in making up the defense. The Portuguese player has an important role in the big time, but he is not someone to base the whole team on him. The rest of the back line like Cordoba or Samuel have already seen their glory days, while young lions like Santon are not yet consistent in form.
Flawless midfield in excellent physical shape that aggressively breaks the rivals has always been the basis of Mourinho’s philosophy. But his warriors are tired and wounded in various battles. Cambiasso, Stankovic, Vieira, Zanetti are veterans, biology works against them; Mourinho is aware of that and he insists on signing at least one younger midfielder, someone like Fabregas. This transfer is practically science fiction and his alternative Obi Mikel is not the player to create the play either. Tiago Motta was signed, whose arrival to Genoa prolonged his career, but Inter already has a player like this Brazilian. Another one whose glory days are over, he won’t harm the team but won’t help much either.
And finally the offensive department. Moody Ibrahimovic looking for a partner. This year it was Mario Balloteli, but incredible ego comes along with his talent, that limits the trust between partners in tandem and annoys the players too. Diego Milito will be there to next season; after the relegation with Zaragoza „Il Principe“ regained his old form by returning to Genoa.
But Milito is a typical striker, which points to Mourinho’s plan to try again with 4-3-3 and use Ibra and Balotelli in the same plan in which Quaresma and Mancini failed this season. The only question is: WHO will run? In other words who will make manager’s favourite 4-5-1 formation in defense. They need a Joe Cole or a Robben. Inter haven’t got such players.
There are rumours about Tevez’s signing, but that is not a realistic target. Any player that is worth something is already in England or Spain or looking to get there. Italians must deal with the leftovers.
If Mourinho had done some research of the country he was coming to, he must have heard of the famous saying on the Apennines: “There is no such thing as reheated soup”.
He won’t manage to create the new Chelsea and he will have to pay the bill next May.
