Celtic Park is one of the most difficult stadiums to play on, if your jersey doesn’t have green and white colour on it that is, and the Bhoys have beaten some great of European sides thanks to the magnificent support from the stands. However, things were completely different when Celtic would play on the European travels as they couldn’t win away for six years. No wonder that almost nobody believed they would eliminate Dinamo Moscow after losing 1:0 at Celtic Park.
It was really strange to see attack-minded team like Celtic adopt a defensive approach on the travels as somehow the former managers believed that was the right way to success in away games. Nevertheless, one man changed everything and he did it at the start of his career at the club. Tony Mowbray believed his side could overturn the one-goal deficit from the first leg and unlike his predecessors, he adopted the same approach as he had done in the first leg. That probably surprised the hosts that expected something different from the Bhoys and it produced excellent results. The Hoops neutralized Dinamo’s lead just before half-time break, only to win the tie thanks to Samaras’ goal in injury time.
Celtic were lucky to come away with a win after scoring in the dying moments of the game but it was no less than they deserved for the positive approach throughout the game. Tony Mowbray succeeded in breaking Celtic’s European curse and now his team will be much more relaxed when playing away and I am positive the results will be much better as well. With the Champions League fourth round qualifying draw due on Friday, I bet the clubs in the draw will be looking to avoid Celtic after this.
