Groningen’s prolific striker Marcus Berg, who had become a regular in the senior national team, joined the U21 side in order to help them at the tournament they hosted and he immediately showed why he was tracked by the number of European clubs. Berg scored a hat-trick in the opening game against Belarus and thus helped his side record a very important win, while at the same time he impressed the visiting scouts and he therefore made a big step towards making a move to much bigger club then Groningen.
The Swedish player has already made a name for himself while playing for Groningen, the club he had joined after impressing at IFK Goteborg. During the two seasons he has spent in Groningen, Berg scored impressive 38 goals and thus become one of the most prolific strikers in Dutch Eredivisie. The 22-year-old player is one of the hottest prospects in Europe and all major Dutch teams are locked in the battle to sign him. AZ Alkmaar and Ajax are among the teams interested in his signature, but I am confident that more clubs will join the race after the U21 Euro, especially if Berg continues with impressive performances.
It is no wonder that this player is held in high regard throughout the Europe as he is a very complete striker. Even though he is not especially tall, Berg is a great header of the ball, whereas he can score goals using either foot. His first touch is also very good and the player is also known to be able to score from very tight angles. Berg has already played 7 games for the senior national team, but he had no problems joining the Under 21 side when called upon. Sweden U21 side will definitely profit from having him in the team at this tournament, while this is also a good chance for the player to impress his future employers. I predict a great future for the Swedish striker and you shouldn’t be surprised if he is named the Player of the Tournament.
